Insurance Fraud Case Study

(Names and some details have been changed to ensure confidentiality)

A major insurance carrier contacted Mission Possible Investigations to conduct surveillance work on a 32 year old man (Mike) who claimed a worker’s compensation claim after being injured on the job. He was out on disability and according to his statement he could not continue work at his construction job due to the pain and the injury.

Mission Possible Investigations was provided the information to conduct surveillance. During the investigation, Mike was found to be quite mobile and seemed fine with daily activities including walking, driving, and going to the store and even carrying bags and boxes. Further surveillance showed him to be going to different homes and conducting what appeared to be maintenance, landscaping and odd jobs around several people’s homes.

Investigators were unable to confirm that Mike did not attend doctors’ appointments he claimed to have and instead investigators saw him working at various locations during this time. Further searches showed Craigslist’s ads with Mike’s phone number advertising handyman services. Investigators were able to gather the evidence that Mike was running a side business doing handyman and landscaping services while claiming a debilitating work-ending injury on the job.

Surveillance and other investigator work was conducted over a month of time. The final detailed written report with video and photographic evidence was provided to the insurance carriers who further took action against the insurance fraud. Mission Possible Investigations evidence was critical to the insurance companies success.
